Om eerlijk te zijn, had ik helemaal niet zo veel van dit boek verwacht toen ik het oppakte. The Justice of Kings was een van de boeken die vanuit Goldsboro’s GSFF abbonnement bij me aankwam en ik wist er dus ook helemaal niet zo veel over. Maar wat een verrassing was dit…

His duty is to uphold the law of the empire using whatever tools he has at his disposal: whether it’s his blade, the arcane secrets passed down from Justice to Justice, or his wealth of knowledge of the laws of the empire. But usually his reputation as one of the most revered—and hated—Justices is enough to get most any job done. 

When Vonvalt investigates the murder of a noblewoman, he finds his authority being challenged like never before. As the simple case becomes more complex and convoluted, he begins to pull at the threads that unravel a conspiracy that could see an end to all Justices, and a beginning to lawless chaos across the empire. 

Ik begon dit boek te lezen omdat in februari het vervolg uitkomt, The Tyranny of Faith. Waarschijnlijk kan je dan ook al raden welk thema enorm centraal staat in deze serie. Morele kwesties en geloof. Het was allemaal op zo een bijzondere manier gedaan. Het is een bijzondere fantasiewereld waarin een mysterie verwoven zit. Alleen is dit mysterie helemaal niet het belangrijkste van het boek, maar eerder een kleinigheid voor onze hoofdpersoon.

Dit verhaal wordt ook op een heel aparte manier verteld. Je luistert naar het verhaal vanuit een van de personages, maar dit personage is ondertussen al ouder en vertelt terug over de gebeurtenissen in het verleden. Dit haalde soms iets van de spanning weg in situaties waarin je onzeker was over het lot van onze hoofdpersonen, maar het gaf ook juist een heel interessante blik op wat er nog gaat komen. Je hebt namelijk wel al iets van voorkennis, maar niet genoeg om daardoor al te weten waar het verhaal heengaat.

Het enige nadeel van dit boek is dat het misschien iets te veel dingen oppakt. Je hebt het mysterie, de magie, de politieke situaties die zich creëren… Soms is dit iets veel voor één boek dat niet zo heel dik is. Alsnog zou ik het iedereen aanraden.
