City of Stairs is een urban fantasy boek over verloren goden, onderdrukking en een mysterieuze moord. Het is het eerste boek in een trilogie die nu bijna tien jaar oud is. Hoe verhoudt het zich ten opzichte van huidige boeken?

Dit is de tweede keer dat ik City of Stairs lees, de eerste keer was twee jaar geleden in 2021. Ik moet eerlijk toegeven… Ik vond het boek toen een heel stuk beter. Niet dat er iets mis is met het boek, maar… het is niet speciaal. Het is niet iets wat ik niet eerder heb gelezen.

Het boek is een combinatie van een fantasy wereld ontdekken en een moordzaak oplossen. Iets wat een interessante combinatie is, die niet per sé goed uitpakte. Het voelde alsof beide oké werden uitgevoerd, maar daardoor allebei net iets tekort kwamen.

Over het algemeen een leuk en vermakelijk boek, maar niet een boek dat ik aanraad. Jammer, want de eerste keer dat ik dit boek las, raadde ik het juist wel iedereen aan. Misschien verliest het dan toch zijn magie wanneer je het voor de tweede keer leest, zelfs wanneer je bijna alles alweer bent vergeten… Spijtig.
